Is a Neck Lift Right for You?
If you have concerns about loose, sagging skin in the neckline, then a neck lift may be an excellent choice for you. A neck lift corrects the look of neck bands and/or a "turkey neck," which result when the muscles that support the neck (platysma) sag and separate in the midline. A neck lift can also be performed if you are bothered about the appearance of excess fat or a "double chin."
Dr. Taylor performs this procedure for people of various ages and customizes every technique to accommodate each individual's level of skin laxity. In some cases where the degree of aging is less advanced, she may recommend liposuction under the chin rather than a full neck lift. Other non-surgical treatments may also provide subtle improvements without surgery, including KYBELLA®, an injectable procedure approved by the FDA specifically to reduce the fat that causes a double chin.
A Customized Procedure
Dr. Taylor considers several issues when approaching neck lift surgery, including the amount of excess skin present, the presence of neck fat, and the degree of muscle weakness or separation. All of these factors will be accounted for when developing your personal treatment plan.
Dr. Taylor will meet with you during your consultation and evaluate the area to be treated. She will also ask you several questions about your expectations for surgery. It would be helpful for you to bring in a few photos that represent the results you hope to achieve. Your conversation with Dr. Taylor and physical assessment will influence which treatment is suggested.
- Neck lift: A neck lift will remove excess skin and fat to create a smoother, more youthful-looking neck and jaw line. Dr. Taylor often combines different techniques to achieve the best results. Skin excision is often performed in conjunction with muscle tightening and liposuction under the chin to restore a youthful neck contour. Younger patients who still have good skin elasticity may benefit from liposuction alone. Dr. Taylor will customize your procedure to produce the most elegant results with the longest-lasting outcome.
- Neck lift with facelift: When skin aging is present in both the neck and lower- to mid-face, Dr. Taylor may recommend a neck lift with facelift. This option is best for individuals with more advanced aging who require tightening of the facial and neck muscles. Fat transfer techniques can also be included as to restore facial volume to areas of the face that appear sunken or gaunt.
- Non-surgical treatments: Very mild neck sagging can sometimes be corrected non-surgically with treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic. Careful injections of BOTOX into the platysma muscle can soften neck bands and create a slight lifting effect that lasts for about 3 to 6 months.
Your procedure will take place at our accredited surgery suite. Neck lift surgery is generally performed using general anesthesia. Local anesthetic may be used if no skin excision or muscle tightening is needed. Dr. Taylor will explain all of your options for pain relief during your consultation.
I love what I do. What could be more rewarding than helping someone feel beautiful?
— Dr. Anne Taylor
Dr. Taylor is very careful to use incision patterns that are subtle, yet effective. Most neck lifts require incisions in the natural facial contours, such as behind the ears. An incision may also be made under the chin if liposuction is being performed. Dr. Taylor then removes excess skin and lifts and tightens the neck muscles to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing outcome. Fat transfer techniques can also be included at this time if necessary, which involves harvesting fat tissue from the neck or abdomen and redistributing it to areas of facial atrophy.
You will be asked to wear a wrap dressing around your neck for a few days following surgery. This will help reduce swelling and ensure that you heal properly. Dr. Taylor will ask you to return for a check-up appointment the day after surgery so that she can evaluate your progress and answer any questions. She will explain all of your post-operative instructions in detail after your surgery at your follow up appointment.
Some bruising and discomfort is to be expected for the first few days. You neck may feel tight or slightly sore, and this is normal. Oral pain medication is prescribed to enhance your comfort if needed. Dr. Taylor also recommends that you keep your head elevated to minimize puffiness for the first week or two.
Most people are able to return to work in about 1 week. However, activity should be limited for 4 to 6 weeks following your procedure. Discoloration may be present for 1 to 2 weeks, but it can be concealed with makeup. The exact length of recovery will depend on how quickly your body heals and the extent of your surgery.
You will continue to see Dr. Taylor for follow-up appointments until she has determined your incisions have sufficiently healed. Most people are fully recovered by about 6 weeks and enjoy a more attractive neck contour with smoother, firmer skin.
