What Are the Different Types of Facelift?
Liquid facelift: Some people with unpronounced wrinkling or mild skin laxity may benefit from a minimally-invasive liquid facelift. Dr. Taylor sometimes recommends this option to women and men with very minor skin sagging who want a subtle lift. A liquid facelift procedure uses a combination of facial fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic to gently smooth, lift and plump the skin. There are no scalpels or anesthesia required and the treatment can usually be performed within one hour.
SmartLift: SmartLift is the word we use at Aesthetica to describe a great option for patients who have mild to moderate sagging and skin laxity in their lower face and neck, but want a less extensive surgery and a shorter recovery than a full facelift. The procedure includes liposuction of the neck for sculpting facial contours, and skin tightening of the cheeks, jaw, jowls and neck. The procedure takes about 3 hours and can be done with local anesthesia — so you do not have the risk of general anesthesia. Also, the shorter incisions heal up faster, and most people are able to go back to work after 7 to 10 days. Most patients feel very little discomfort and are able to work from home for the week after surgery. And there is normally minimal swelling and bruising, which can be minimized with cover-up. Mini facelift: Dr. Taylor offers a mini facelift to individuals who have moderate facial aging in the lower face, jawline and neck. This technique can provide dramatic results for the right person and uses shorter incisions (see illustration). A mini facelift tightens the cheeks and jawline and can often be performed with local anesthetic.
Full facelift: When the degree of facial aging is advanced, Dr. Taylor will likely recommend a full facelift (see illustration). This option provides complete facial rejuvenation by lifting and smoothing the skin in the temples, mid-face, and jawline. In some cases, fat may be harvested from another area of the body – such as the neck or abdomen – and injected to add volume to areas that have deflated with age. Fat grafting helps create more comprehensive results by restoring a youthful facial shape and softer contours.

Your Facelift Surgery
Your facelift surgery will be performed in a state-of-the-art, fully accredited surgery suite. For those undergoing a full facelift, general anesthesia is the best option. A mini-facelift can often be performed using local anesthetic. Most people are able to return home the same day, but in some cases, an overnight stay may be recommended.
Dr. Taylor customizes your surgical technique to accommodate the degree of correction needed as well as your desired results. The size and number of incisions will also depend on your specific procedure. Dr. Taylor is careful to hide incisions so that they are unnoticeable to the naked eye. Usually, incisions are placed in the hairline (in front of the ear) and tucked around behind the ear. The skin and lower layers of facial muscle and connective tissue are repositioned, with great care taken to adjust them in a natural way to avoid the “pulled” look of older facelift techniques. In some cases, excess fat will be harvested from the neck or abdomen and added to areas that need plumping.

A gauze dressing will be placed around your cheeks after surgery to speed healing and reduce puffiness. You will visit Dr. Taylor the day after surgery for a follow-up appointment. She will also provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your face over the next several weeks.
Most people find that any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. The length of recovery will depend on whether you had a full or mini facelift. Most people who have a full facelift feel comfortable in public after about 2 weeks. The downtime needed for a mini facelift is usually slightly less than a full facelift, with some patients feeling good enough to be out in public in 7 to 10 days.
Dr. Taylor will continue to monitor your results during recovery to ensure that you are happy, healthy, and thrilled with your results. After about 4 to 6 weeks, most men and women are pleased to find that bruising and swelling have subsided, and they look like a younger, refreshed version of themselves.

How long does a facelift last?
The results of a facelift should last several years. Facelift surgery doesn’t stop the aging process, of course, but it can result in patients looking like they did 10 years earlier. With that perspective, you can expect the results of a facelift to last about 10 years. You may still want to get nonsurgical treatments to maintain the results.
How safe is facelift surgery?
The safety record of facelift surgery is very good, especially when performed by a board-certified and highly trained plastic surgeon. Modern facelift techniques have minimized the risks while improving the aesthetic outcomes. There are, of course, risks involved with any surgical procedure, and Dr. Taylor discusses them in detail with patients during their consultations.
How long after surgery will it take to see my results?
The swelling and bruising that commonly follow facelift surgery initially camouflage the results. For most patients, swelling starts resolving within 4 to 7 days after the procedure. After about 2 weeks, patients often see improvements in their appearance. The results continue emerging and after a month should be obvious. Still, you should plan to get a facelift several months before an important social event to ensure you are completely healed.
What is the best age to get a facelift?
Age isn’t really the primary consideration when choosing to get a facelift. More important is the skin’s elasticity and the appearance of sagging. The age range of facelift patients extends from the late 30s to the 60s and even 70s. That said, facelift patients in their late 40s and 50s likely will benefit the most from facial plastic surgery.
Will I have visible scars after my facelift surgery?
Dr. Taylor makes facelift incisions in discreet locations so that the resulting scars are virtually imperceptible. This includes in the natural crease in front of the ear and along the hairline. Some patients camouflage incisions with new hairstyles, but this is typically not necessary.
