Is Laser Tattoo Removal Right for You?

The individuals who benefit most from laser tattoo removal are those who want to fade or lighten the appearance of a tattoo that they regret or no longer want. The effectiveness of your treatment will depend on many factors, including your skin type; the size, age, depth, and color of your tattoo; and the number of laser sessions you have. Your treatment provider will thoroughly evaluate all of these conditions to determine how successful laser tattoo removal will be for you. Blue or black tattoos on light skin often have the most dramatic results.

Lasers at Aesthetica Surgery & Spa use a variety of wavelengths to target a broad spectrum of ink colors. Many of our clients have seen almost complete removal, although this is never a guarantee. Our laser tattoo removal uses the same advanced technology as laser skin rejuvenation. Many people who are good candidates for laser tattoo removal are also good candidates for this and other non-surgical services.

CBUS Top Pick

Aesthetica has been named a CBUS Top Pick for Best Cosmetic Surgery Practice—that's a big deal! Of the more than 30,000 businesses in the area, the Columbus community voted Aesthetica Surgery & Spa as one of the top 3 in our field. Thank you for voting, and cheers to being among the best of the best!

A Customized Procedure

Laser tattoo removal requires a high level of precision, skill, and customization in order to fade the tattoo ink effectively while maintaining safety and minimizing side effects. Your laser wavelengths will be specifically set to accommodate the features of your tattoo and your unique characteristics.

In some cases, Dr. Taylor or your treatment provider may recommend one of the following in addition to, or as an alternate for, laser tattoo removal:

  • Excision: Tattoo removal using skin excision involves removing the tattoo through surgery. This technique is usually most beneficial for smaller tattoos. The benefit of skin excision is that it removes the tattoo completely; the tradeoff is that it leaves a small scar. Skin excision can be used in conjunction with laser tattoo removal for the right clients.
  • Dermabrasion: Superficial tattoos often respond well to dermabrasion techniques. This option uses very deep exfoliation to abrade and remove the ink-stained skin. Like laser tattoo removal, this procedure requires multiple treatments to achieve the best results.

Laser tattoo removal is the preferred method of treatment in most cases because of its ability to effectively fade tattoo ink with minimal side effects. Dr. Taylor or your treatment provider will thoroughly explain all of your options during your consultation.

Your Treatment

You will be asked to avoid sun exposure before and after your laser tattoo removal. A sun burn could intensify side effects and cause unwanted changes to the skin pigmentation.

Your skin will be washed and prepped prior to your treatment. Numbing cream is often used to ease any discomfort associated with the laser. The laser beam is slowly passed over the treatment area and controlled pulses of laser energy are delivered to the skin. This breaks up the tattoo ink, fading it and making it less visible. This process is not usually uncomfortable for most people, but you might feel a light burning or stinging sensation while the laser is working. Treatment can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour or longer, depending on the size of the tattoo.

Your Downtime

Downtime from laser tattoo removal is minimal. You are free to return to normal activities immediately, but you may notice some redness, itching, minor blistering, swelling, and tenderness around the treated area. These side effects subside very quickly after your procedure. You will be provided with detailed instructions on how to care for you tattoo after treatment, including keeping the area dry, applying antibiotic ointment, and avoiding sun exposure.

You should expect to have multiple treatments in order to see the best results. Generally, anywhere from 6 to 10 sessions are required, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. You may need more or less, depending on your tattoo. You will see more lightening of your tattoo with each treatment. Time will also help to fade the ink pigment.

Once you have had the recommended number of laser procedures, your tattoo should have faded enough that it is no longer obvious. Some clients also choose to cover up any remaining pigment with cosmetic products.
